21 Lessons Learned While Stoned (on Medical Marijuana)

I’ve been smoking pot all week.  OK not actually smoking, but “I’ve been ‘vaping’ pot all week”.  It’s been one week since I picked up my first prescription for medical marijuana.

I’ve spent a lot of time feeling high this past week.  It takes time to adjust to the psychoactive effects.  The high is getting less intense but the pain control is still there.  I’m getting closer to figuring out my dosages (hopefully?).

Despite the lack of mental focus, it has been the best week I’ve had in years!!!

Get this, since I started marijuana, I haven’t taken any opiates or valium.  I really really can’t believe it.

Here’s a list of 21 lessons I’ve learned this week while stoned.

  1. Medical marijuana can make you high. But not all of it makes you high.
  2. It’s hard to concentrate when high on cannabis. Fortunately, the high feeling gets less intense as your body adjusts to this new medication.
  3. Being trapped on the couch, and staring at the floor for 20 mins has a name: “Couch-Lock”
  4. There are thousands of different types of marijuana. Each type has different physical and mental effects.
  5. I found one strain that completely eliminates the pain. Both the muscle spasms and nerve pain are totally gone when I use it, but it also makes me feel really high.  I’ve been told it will get less intense as my tolerance increases.
  6. I’m enjoying the best sleep of my life.  Actual, whole-night sleep, without pain pills, muscle relaxers, or sleeping pills!  It’s been years!!!!
  7. Each strain has different proportions the active components in marijuana (and there are over 400 components).
  8. Figuring out what to take, how much, how often, what mixture, is trial and error. The goal is to find the right mix to keep the pain at bay and allow me to stay focused enough to function.
  9. My house smells like marijuana. How am I going to explain this to the parents of my son’s friends? How am I going to explain this to anybody??  I hear cooking smells even more.  How do other patients keep this a secret?
  10. Playing monopoly is way more fun. Sponge Bob is way funnier.
  11. Munchies are real…I may need to invest in a lock on the refrigerator. But they only happen with some stains
  12. Vaporizers are a little complicated, keep the instructions handy. I thought I took my medicine two times before I ever actually took it.
  13. A mix of baking soda, lemongrass oil, and peppermint oil make a great air freshener.
  14. Conversations I never thought I’d have with my kids: “Is that broccoli?”  “I’ve smelled that on some college students before!”  “Mom, please don’t hug me, I don’t want to go to my interview smelling like pot.”
  15. Many people don’t look at marijuana as a prescription medication yet. I’ve had so many people ask me to try it.  I’ve rarely had people ask me to share my prescription pain pills or muscle relaxers.  I’m thinking of having a t-shirt made that says, “I use medical marijuana.  No, I don’t share.”
  16. Using marijuana in public is WEIRD. Really, really weird.
  17. Marijuana was routinely prescribed by doctors and fulfilled by pharmacists until 1937. The American Medical Association objected to making medical marijuana illegal.
  18. I’m honestly shocked at the level of pain control medical marijuana is offering. I feel ten trillion times better than I have on any other medication ever!  I’m so damn glad.
  19. At the same time, I’m a little bit angry. I feel like I missed out on a lot in the past two years because of the pain.  All that suffering and there was an amazing solution being kept from me.I’m also mad because I know there are others out there who could be helped by medical marijuana but its still so difficult to obtain and is still illegal so many places.
  20. Medical marijuana may prevent organ rejection? That’s what they told me at the ATC…I’ll be looking for more information.
  21. Medicinal marijuana, specifically Indica, acts as a bronchciodialator. I was skeptical when I heard this.  But I haven’t used my inhaler since day one and this is usually one of the worst months for my asthma.

There is hope! A lifetime in pain might not be my future.

If you are considering medical marijuana, just TRY IT!  It works!!!!  OMG it actually works!  I’m blown away.  I was skeptical, after all I’ve tried everything else.  Why on earth did I not try this sooner?Trending Now
