What’s a Cannabis Nurse?
When I first became a nurse, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d one day be a cannabis nurse. At the time, I wasn’t familiar with the medical uses of cannabis and I wasn’t even aware of the depths of research examining the endocannabinoid system.
It was only after my own tragic injury while working as a hospice nurse and the subsequent quest for pain relief, that I discovered cannabis nursing, a budding new field for healthcare professionals.
A Cannabis Nurse is a licensed or registered nurse who obtains a working knowledge of the endocannabinoid system and cannabinoid therapeutics, and responsibly utilizes it in their practice.
Cannabis nursing is fast becoming a recognized field. In July of 2018, the Journal of Nursing Regulation published the first, NCSBN National Nursing Guidelines for Medical Marijuana.

The American Cannabis Nurses Association
Shortly into my research about cannabis, I was thrilled to discover the American Cannabis Nurses Association, a professional organization of nurses committed to educating healthcare professionals and patients about cannabis.
On their History page, they state, ” The ACNA was envisioned as a nursing organization that represented the emerging field of endocannabinoid therapeutics to professional nurses, providing scientific, patient, and educational opportunities to assist nurses in understanding and advocating for their patients’ needs.”
