Using Essential Oils for Bloody Noses

This morning, my seven-year-old was running out the door for school when he got a bloody nose (again!).

Repeat bloody noses plague him during allergy season.  (Despite putting a new humidifier in his room and adding lots of plants to increase the overall humidity.)

So trying while I was trying to stop bleeding so he wouldn’t be late for school (and trying to save his sweatshirt from bloodstains), I grabbed the closest essential oil, Frankincense.

I put two drops of Frankincense on a tissue and added a drop of lemongrass.  Frankincense and lemongrass are both astringents, they tighten up blood vessels to help stop the flow of blood.  (I also use Helichrysum.)  The nose-bleed stopped instantly.

NOTE: Always dilute essential oils before applying to the skin. Undiluted essential oils can cause irritation or trigger an allergy to the essential oil!

How to Stop Nose Bleeds Fast with Essential Oils

  1. Combine a teaspoon of a CARRIER OIL (coconut, jojoba, almond, etc.)
  2. Mix in a few drops of essential oils that stop bleeding (Helichrysum, Frankincense, etc.)
  3. Apply diluted oil to tissue
  4. Dab around nose and nostrils
  5. If bleeding does not stop, gently pinch near the bridge of the nose, tilt head forward, and apply an ice pack.

Use therapeutic grade essential oils.  Do not apply undiluted.  Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.  Do not use on broken skin.  Do not use essential oils on children under age 3. Immediately stop use and consult a health professional if skin sensitivity or allergy occurs.

Always speak to your licensed healthcare provider before adding to your healthcare routine.
