One week until Christmas—Did you get your Christmas cards out? Me either.
My mailbox has been speckled with the most stunning cards from Christmas card artists. Friends and family members who spend enormous amounts of time creating the most beautiful Christmas cards.
Each year the duty of preparing Christmas cards tormented me. I felt compelled to send them, out of social obligation, but never relished the job. Finally, I let it go. I stopped sending them and forgot about them altogether. I am a reformed Christmas card sender (since 2007).
Maybe time didn’t allow you to complete all of the social obligations of the season? Or you weren’t able to find that perfect gift for someone? We can’t do EVERYTHING. Sometimes a gift card must do.
Watch a movie; during the most beautiful parts, the movie kicks into slow motion. Beauty happens in an instant; we often miss it.
The director slows down so the audience can see how many aspects congeal to form one beautiful moment. We are submerged in beautiful moments but often never slow down enough to appreciate them.
Slow down and take the time to appreciate the amazing moments you are experiencing each day.
Submerge yourself in the spirit of the season. People are jolly during the holidays.
Kids have extra energy (maybe from sugar and artificial colors in Christmas cookies?). Channel it into crafts, decorating, baking, or wrapping.
Celebrate together. Get up and dance. Eat candy canes. Sing Christmas carols. “The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.” -Buddy the Elf
Find other ways to spread cheer. Smile at a stranger, offer your prime parking spot find to another, leave candy canes on your neighbor’s doorknobs.
The kids are hitting each other with wrapping paper tubes. The cat’s climbing the Christmas tree. Great Aunt Nina asked, for the ninth time, when you’re going to have another baby. And your red cup from Starbucks does NOT say Merry Christmas. You’re frustrated, annoyed, angry even.
Sometimes we just need to sip a martini and let things be. Kids will be kids. Cats will be cats. Smile and tell Aunt Nina, “Maybe next year.” Does it really matter what your coffee cup looks like!?
There are things beyond our control. We can’t change them. All we can change is how we react to them. Take a deep breath; relax; and revel in the holiday spirit!
