My son and I were recently discussing the benefits and dangers of cannabis when the topic turned to concussive traumatic encephalopathy and football. Here’s the video:
I recently read two reports about football that unnerved me.
I read 52% of college football coaches interviewed were against marijuana legalization. This means most college football coaches are uneducated about cannabis.
According to CBS, 61% of Americans overall are in favor of full marijuana legalization and 88% are in favor of medical marijuana legalization.
The lack of education in college football troubles me because football players might benefit medical marijuana more than most people.
NOT only to can cannabis eliminate the need for opiates in injury prone athletes, but also because weed might save the lives of football players.
Let me explain.
That’s an obscene number.
99% of NFL players studied (after death) suffered from CTE. Here are the details of the study on Forbes:
The finding was rather striking: 110 out of 111 deceased players had evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease associated with repetitive head trauma.
CTE, or concussive traumatic encephalopathy, is a debilitating neurological condition caused by repeat head trauma, like concussions–it’s brain damage. It’s horrible and it’s deadly.
It’s progressive, which means it keeps getting worse until the patient dies. There’s NO treatment. Doctors can’t even diagnose it officially until after death.
When teenage kid signs with the NFL, they may also be signing their life away.
What those college football coaches interviewed must not realize is that cannabis can help CTE.
Have you heard? The United States government OWNS a patent on cannabinoids. This fact is often passed off as a conspiracy theory, but it is 100% TRUE.
I had to read the official document myself to believe it. See it here at the US Patent Office: The US Govt’s Patent number 6630507
Notice that the “assignee” listed, or the owner of the patent, is “The United States of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services (Washington, DC)”
The US government KNOWS that cannabis could potentially protect against CTE. They have known it since at least 1999, according to this federal documentation.
Here’s exactly what the patent says about the brain protecting powers of cannabis:
“Cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma…”
The government claims that they have scientifically PROVEN there is are medical benefits of cannabis. They’re so certain they obtained a patent. But they simultaneously keep cannabis listed as a Schedule I controlled substance insisting “it has no medical benefit”.
But they simultaneously keep cannabis listed as a Schedule I controlled substance insisting “it has no medical benefit”.
Medicine is being withheld from patients and prohibition makes effective research of cannabis, extremely difficult.
This is an atrocity.
And it gets sadder.
The US patent on cannabinoids details that cannabis can also benefit “the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and HIV dementia.”
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the leading causes of death and cannabis might help treat it.
Aside from the government documented neurological effects, medical marijuana has demonstrated benefits for numerous conditions like PTSD, chronic pain, inflammation, stress, cancer, and more.
Maybe it’s time to change the Schedule I classification?
