Often patients with serious chronic issues benefit from adding cannabis to their healthcare regimen. This is especially true for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Crohn’s Disease. Some patients with mild cases may be able to eliminate pharmaceuticals completely. Many others successfully utilize cannabis in combination with pharmaceuticals. 

Anecdotal evidence and research show cannabis may affect the symptoms of Crohn’s disease in a variety of ways thus enhancing the patient’s quality of life.

Here five different ways cannabis can impact Crohn’s disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Nausea, Vomiting, and Diarrhea 

Patients with Crohn’s Disease often suffer from a variety of distressing symptoms. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are frequently among the most disabling symptoms a patient may endure. For many patients, episodes of nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea can be completely debilitating.

Cannabis is famous as an antiemetic. It’s highly valued in oncology for its effects on chemotherapy-associated nausea. Ample research and anecdotal evidence show cannabis can decrease episodes of nausea and vomiting. While a 2014 Canadian population study found that  28.6% of patients with IBD reported improved diarrhea after beginning a cannabis regimen. 

Pain

Patients with IBD and Crohn’s Disease frequently report episodes of pain. Some episodes may be localized while others may be widespread. 

A 2014 study examined the effects of cannabis on patients with Irritable Bowel Disease who used cannabis. 83.9% of the participants reported cannabis improved abdominal pain, 76.8% reported that cannabis improved abdominal cramping, and 48.2% found cannabis improved joint pain as well. 

It’s important to note that this particular study researcher also noted cannabis users with Crohn’s disease more often had worsening disease than people who did not use cannabis. We don’t know if cannabis masks the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, or if people with more serious instances of the disease are more likely to use cannabis. 

Inducing Remission

Achieving remission is often a goal of treatment for patients with Crohn’s Disease and IBD. Remission is when the disease is no longer in an active state and symptoms recede. 

A small-scale placebo-controlled study conducted in Israel in 2013, found 10 out of 11 participants experienced a significant positive clinical response after beginning a medical cannabis regimen. 5 out of 11 participants went into complete remission after 8 weeks of regular cannabis administration. 

Similar research was presented in 2018, “In a randomised, placebo-controlled study, researchers from Israel have shown that cannabis can produce clinical remission in up to 65% of individuals after 8 weeks of treatment, but that this improvement does not appear to result from a dampening down of the underlying inflammatory process.”

There’s no evidence to suggest cannabis decreases gut inflammation directly, but cannabis is coveted for its anti-inflammatory properties in general. 

May Mitigate Complications

Many people live successful happy lives with chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease, but in some cases, the disease process can result in complications that can be dangerous and deadly. 

A retrospective cohort study in 2019 found cannabis users were less likely to have active fistulizing disease, intra-abdominal abscesses, blood product transfusions, colectomies, and parenteral nutrition requirements.

The study concluded that “cannabis use may mitigate several of the well-described complications of Crohn’s disease among hospital inpatients. These effects could possibly be through the effect of cannabis in the endocannabinoid system.” 

Another study found “ Fifteen of the patients had 19 surgeries during an average period of 9 years before cannabis use, but only 2 required surgery during an average period of 3 years of cannabis use. Again, much more research is needed to truly determine the effects cannabis has on Inflammatory Bowel Disease, but the current research available is promising.  

Increased appetite

Weight loss is another challenging symptom experienced by many patients with Crohn’s Disease and IBD. 

One of the most famous effects of marijuana is “the munchies”. It’s true that marijuana can act as an appetite stimulant. In animal models, researchers found delta 9 THC triggers hunger hormones. 

It’s also interesting to note, that many researchers theorize cannabis may help maintain a healthy weight as studies have found chronic cannabis users generally have a healthier BMI than nonusers.

Conclusion

Many patients report benefits from cannabis including a reduction in nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, a reduction of pain, and an increased appetite. Patients also often report that cannabis may help mitigate the complications of IBD, and in some patients, it may even induce or maintain remission.  

It’s also important to add, that some physicians have suggested cannabis may mask the symptoms of worsening disease and careful management by a healthcare provider is needed. 

Much more research needs to be done to fully understand how medical marijuana impacts Crohn’s disease or IBD.  As always, new patients should consult with their healthcare provider before adding new substances to their healthcare regimen.

Depending on an individuals metabolism this could take from 20 minutes up to four hours for the process to complete and for the patient to experience effects. 2. Vaporizers are more discreet.

Many consumers choose vaporizers for discretion.

When you consider smell and an outsider’s perception of a lit joint, a vaporizer is dramatically more discreet than smoking.

First, with a vaporizer there’s no need to struggle with a lighter. Vaporized consumption is powered by batteries (keep a cord or extra battery if you’re out for the day). With the rise in the popularity of e-cigarettes, outsiders often can’t tell the difference between someone using a cannabis vaporizer or another substance.

Vapes also smell MUCH LESS than smoking. The intensity of the smell depends on your specific device and the product you are consuming. Vaping dry flower does produce the telltale smell of cannabis, however it’s less intense and dissipates more quickly compared to smoke.

Smoke lingers on clothing, hair, walls, and furniture. It can take weeks to get the smell of cannabis smoke out of a room. Vapor does not linger on clothing or furniture the same way cannabis smoke does. Vaping concentrates is even more discreet than flower.

3. Vaping tastes better.

Cannabis contains hundreds of terpenes which are flavor-rich molecules. Unfortunately, many of these molecules are lost when smoking. The heat of flame causes terpenes to combust. If you really want to appreciate the complex flavors of your bud, you should switch to a dry herb vaporizer.

Vaping allows consumers to fully experience the rush of flavors found in different varieties of cannabis. There are thousands of different strains, and every strain causes a different physiological reaction.

4. Vaping is more efficient and cost effective.

Some studies have found that smoking combusts more than 40% of the cannabinoids. This means a significant portion of the cannabinoids are lost and are not consumed by the patient. Smoking wastes much of the medicated plant.

Vaping on the other hand does not cause combustion. This allows a much larger portion of the cannabinoids to be converted into vapor and to be consumed by inhaling vapor.

Additionally, most vaporizers leave behind what we call “vape poo” or “AVB/ABV” (already vaped bud; already been vaped). The leftover flower in the vaporizer STILL contains some cannabinoids. Already vaped bud can be cooked to fully extract the remaining cannabinoids.

5. Vaping may be healthier than smoking (depending on the product!)

When it comes to health, much of the risks depend on the product you are consuming. EVALI can be dangerous and is believed to be related to vaping dangerous additives. For safety, only vape legal, high-quality products that have been rigorously tested and avoid additives. Wax pens to consume pressed rosin is a great example of a pure product.

When comparing smoking dry flower to vaporizing dry flower, many cannabis experts suggest vaping is superior. When smoking, combustion of the flower produces carcinogenic molecules. These molecules are then inhaled along with the smoke. In theory, when you utilize a dry herb vape you eliminate most of the carcinogens. Of course, we need more research to fully explain the health benefits and risks of vaping.

Conclusion

If you’re a steadfast cannabis smoker, consider switching to vaporization. With a vaporizer, you’ll experience a more discreet method of consumption, with a better taste and less smell. You might even save some money by switching to a vaporizer. Most importantly, in the long run, vaping cannabis could be healthier than smoking it. As always, you should talk to your doctor before altering your new health care plan.

What is decarboxylation?

If you were to eat a raw cannabis flower, you would NOT get high. You could eat a bucket of raw flower and drink cups of raw cannabis juice and still, you will not get high.

Raw (both fresh and dried) cannabis flowers generally contain low amounts of activated THC, however, these buds contain high amounts of THCA. THCA is the precursor of THC. When heated, THCA loses a carbon molecule and becomes THC. THC is the cannabinoid that makes you feel intoxicated.

Cannabis must be heated to convert THCA into THC, this process, called decarboxylation, occurs during smoking or vaping when the flower is exposed to the flame or heat of the vape.

Can You decarboxylate cannabis in the oven?

Yes, you can decarboxylate your cannabis in the oven, however, it will only convert approximately 70% of the THC. You lose many cannabinoids when decarbing in the oven.

When you decarb in a standard oven(or even a small toaster oven) the temperatures fluctuate a great deal during the cooking process, this results in an incomplete decarboxylation.

When decarbing in the oven, it’s also easy to overcook the cannabis flower which results in over-conversion and the cannabinoids will convert into CBN. CBN still offers many medical benefits but is significantly more sedating.

[00:07] Hi, I’m Jessie, I’m a cannabis nurse and the founder of Marijuana Mommy, and today we are talking about decarboxylation and the Ardent Nova Decarboxylator.

[00:20] Decarboxylation is a process that the cannabis flower must undergo to make it medically activated. So when you break down and look at the basic chemistry of the cannabis plant, you’ll find 100 over a hundred different kinds of cannabinoids. And many of these cannabinoids are in a precursor form, which means that they need to be heated to be decarboxylated. So let’s talk about how we actually decarboxylated. Now you can decarb in your oven. Guidelines say you want to heat the flower between 220 to 250 degrees for anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. Now the process varies a lot and unfortunately ovens vary wildly as they heat up and cool down during the heating process. The Ardent Decarboxylator however, is a smart device that consistently heats the cannabis flower or concentrates at a consistent level for the perfect amount of time.

[01:29] And this results in a near perfect decarboxylation every single time, which is virtually impossible with your standard oven. So Ardent sent me this to test and I’m in love with it. It is so remarkably easy to use and takes all the guesswork out of decarboxylation. One of the other awesome features of the Ardent NOVA Decarboxylator is that you can use it to infuse small amounts of oils and butters with your cannabis after decarboxylation. So I’m going to show you how to do both of those.

[02:03] Here we go. My Ardent is already plugged in and you can see there is a green light that appears here and it’s just basically a one button control. So you just take off the top and then inside the Ardent is this metallic container with a silicone top. And this is where the flower goes to decarboxylate. I’m using about two and a half grams of flower. Ardent says you don’t need to grind it, but you want to break your flower into popcorn size buds. And that’s it. You put the top on and you place it back into the device and then you screw on your black top.

[03:18] Then you’re ready to go. All you have to do is press the button. Then after you press start the light will turn red and that means that the process has begun. You do not want to open it while it is decarboxylating. And again it is a smart device so it is going to utilize the sensors within the appliance to maintain the perfect temperature. And this means that the process time will actually vary and it can be anywhere between an hour and a half, to two hours and 20 minutes. But when it is ready, we will see this turn green. And then I will show you the next step.

[03:58] Okay. So decarboxylation has finished. You can see that the light has turned back from red to green. And I’m going to go ahead and unplug it. Now, normally I would wait for this to cool off because inside that container is hot. But I want to go ahead and move on to the infusion to show you how that works. So I’m going to open it up, going to go ahead and dump it. Oh, let’s see.

[04:46] And we have perfectly decarboxylated –well near perfectly dear decarboxylated –cannabis. So if you were decarboxylate in the oven, you would probably get around 70 percent decarboxylation, but with the Ardent NOVA Decarboxylator, it’s near perfect.

[05:05] Now you could use this decarboxylated flower and a number of ways.

[05:10] You could just eat it directly, grind it up, sprinkle it on your food.

[05:14] You could grind it up and pack it into capsules.

[05:17] You could infuse it into oil, which is what I’m going to do to be used in a later recipe or to be taken sublingually.

[05:26] You could even vape or smoke the decarboxylated flower directly, and this would actually be more efficient than smoking or vaping raw flower because you’re not relying on the heat of the vaporizer or the combustion of the flame to properly convert your cannabinoids. They’re already perfectly converted.

[05:46] What I’m going to do with this two and a half grams of decarboxylated cannabis flower is I’m going to infuse it into 30 milliliters, a extra virgin olive oil, and I’m gonna go ahead and just give it a little rough breakup.

[06:16] I already did the calculations for the to determine the THC of my final oil. And I have about just under 600,about 580 milligrams of THC here, IF the flower converted 100 percent. Now, just because the flower converts into THC 100 percent doesn’t necessarily mean that an oil infusion will infuse a hundred percent. Oil infusions usually pick up about 80 to 90 percent of the THC depending on the oil. So I’m expecting about a 86 to 90 percent infusion rate with this oil. I expect the final oil to contain about 490 milligrams of THC.

[07:09] Okay. So you take the flower, you put it into a glass or silicone cup, one that’s going to fit inside this container. So this device is for small batch infusions. If you’re doing a larger infusion, you’re going to need something a significantly bigger, like a magical butter machine. But if you’re infusing small amounts, this device is fantastic. Its just as easy as the decarboxylation process. You add the flower into the oil in either a glass or silicone container–it has to be small enough to fit inside. Then, you just place the container inside, replace the silicone top and just put it all back into the appliance.

[07:59] Then once again, the black top clicks into place, and plug it back in. Then our green light is telling us that it is ready to start infusing. once it turns green, the infusion will be complete and we will be able to strain and then enjoy our fully decarboxylated cannabis oil infused oil.

[09:02] After straining, we are left with completely decarboxylated infused cannabis oil. There is probably about 480 milligrams of THC in these few milliliters of infused olive oil.

[09:25] So if you are making edibles at home or tinctures or even RSO oil, the Ardent decarboxylator is a really, really fantastic device that can help save money in the long run by fully efficiently utilizing your cannabis flower.

How long does a cannabis high last?

Generally, a cannabis-induced high lasts 1-3 hours after smoking or vaping. BUT…

How long you are high for is an individualized experience and depends on many factors. It depends on:

• Method of Ingestion
  • Smoking vs Eating
• Individual’s Tolerance Level
• Strain/Cultivar of Marijuana

Smoking vs Eating Marijuana

Smoking/Vaping cannabis is not as strong and does not last as long as eating it. The effects of edibles last MUCH longer than inhalation.  (Try these kief cookies.)

Keep in mind that oral consumption isn’t effective for everyone because of digestive and/or metabolic issues. For some people, edibles just don’t work. Others are unable to tolerate oral consumption because it has more intoxicating effects. Here’s a chart that explains more.

Biological Difference Between Inhalation vs Oral Consumption

As you can see in the above chart, eating cannabis lasts longer than smoking or vaporizing. When cannabis is eaten, the liver converts delta-9 THC into 11-hydroxy THC. 11-hydroxy THC crosses the blood brain barrier more readily that delta-9 THC.
Edibles are much stronger than smoking.

The cognitive side effects of THC consumed orally are more intense than when smoking or vaping. This is one of the reasons patients should start with a very low dose when starting edibles.

This means, USE CAUTION when consuming edibles. PLEASE start small and increase your dosage very slowly after waiting several hours.

My perfect oral microdose is 2 mg every few hours. That’s a tiny dose-most dispensaries sell edibles that are 5-10 mg each.

Why do some people feel higher longer than for others?

Different Strains/Cultivars Result in Different Health Effects

How long the effects last vary by individual. Not all medical marijuana strains make you feel high.

There are strains of cannabis that have little-to-no intoxicating properties. These are generally high CBD strains with low concentrations of THC.

High CBD, low-THC strains can be life-changing for many, however, CBD alone, is not always effective for every person or ever disorder. Some patients require higher doses of THC.

Additionally, each cultivar/strain can cause a different physiological reaction.

If You Want to Feel Less High, Try Microdosing

My preferred method is to microdose. I take very small doses regularly around the clock.

I prefer vaping but I also make cannabis oil to use when I’m unable to vape. Microdosing keeps my spasms under control with little noticeable effects. On an average day, I take 2 mg every two-four hours. And I take 4-6 ms before bed. On days that my pain levels are high, I take more.

The ideal dosage depends on the individual.

Tolerance Builds Up Over Time

When you first become a marijuana patient, you might feel high often. But slowly your tolerance will build and you will be able to use your medication without serious side effects.

After using medical marijuana, I don’t walk around like a character from a stoner movie.  People can’t tell when I’ve taken my medication.

I don’t get giddy or experience the euphoria that’s often associated with being high.  Some strains make me feel slightly more lifted than others.

Sometimes severe spasms require a higher dose and in that case, then the psychoactive effects can be more pronounced. Those strains might make me feel sedated and sleepy.

Still, even with the side effects of medical marijuana, I function better than I did before MMJ.  The side effects of Valium, opiates, and Lyrica were more challenging than the side-effects of medical marijuana.

Here’s how I make cannabis oil in the crockpot: ABV coconut oil.

What to do if you feel too high from marijuana

If you accidentally consume too much cannabis, you might feel like you’re dying. The good news is no one has ever died from a cannabis overdose.

Still, consuming too much cannabis is an extremely unpleasant experience. It’s commonly called a “green out”.

Overconsumption can result in dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, blackouts, panic attacks, anxiety, confusion.

• Remember it will pass
• Try to stay quiet and calm – breath deeply
• Sleep if you can, if you feel like you need to move, walk.
• Drink water to flush out your system

Homeopathic Remedies for Cannabis Overconsumption

Anecdotal reports say if you don’t have access to high CBD products, you can try these homeopathic remedies for being too high.

Black Pepper:  One of the most common ways of treating a cannabis overdose is sniffing or chewing black pepper. Personally, I’ve never tried it, but there is science to back it up.  Black pepper contains terpene Beta Carophyllene which is thought to help relieve anxiety.

Lemon Juice:  Drinking lemon juice or chewing lemon rinds is also said to help relieve cannabis related anxiety. Lemons contain limonene, a terpene that been purported to help relieve cannabis-related anxiety.

So you’re thinking about using a vaporizer for dry herb? Vaping dry herb is my preferred method of consumption.

To start, hare some basics about vaporizers, after that, we’ll get into the best dry herb vapes in every category and price range.

Vaping Dry Herb vs Vaping Wax vs Oil

There are a variety of types of vaporizers depending on what material you plan to consume.

There are vapes for dry herb, vapes for wax (a type of concentrate), and vapes for oil (another type of concentrate). There are also hybrid vapes that can be used for a combination of dry herb and concentrates. For the purpose of this article, we’re focusing on dry herb vapes (and some of these also happen to be hybrids).

Portable Vapes vs Non-Portable Vapes

If you plan to carry your vape with you to use at your own convenience, then you must be sure to choose a PORTABLE dry herb vape. Portable dry herb vapes are always handheld and operate via a battery (they must be charged). They come in a wide range of prices with different features and designs. With vaporizers, you generally get what you pay for.

The other alternative is non-portable vaporizers. Non-portable vapes can be tabletop, like the world-famous Volcano Vaporizer, or they can be handheld, like The Plenty. Non-portable vapes tend to be the most powerful and efficient, however, they cannot be tossed in your bag or pocket. Instead, they need to be packed up to travel. Non-portable vapes do not use batteries and require access to electricity to operate them.

Conduction Vaporizers vs Convection Vaporizers

Different dry herb vapes, use different heating methods. Some use conduction, some use convection, and some are a hybrid.

• Conduction means the heat sources comes into direct contact with the herb (depending on the temperature, this can produce combustion or burn the herb.
• Convection means hot air is passed through the chamber and over the herb and that the herb does not come into contact with the heat source.

You’ll hear a lot of vaporizers proclaim they are full convection vapes. This is not always the case. Because of the small size of portable vaporizers, it’s nearly impossible to completely avoid conduction heating (and therefore potential burning of herb). If you want a true convection experience, invest in a Volcano.

How Do You Operate a Dry Herb Vaporizer?

Most vaporizers are relatively easy to operate. Each device differs slightly, but the general procedure is the same. If you can’t figure it out how to work your device, turn to YouTube, where you’ll find a plethora of videos with clear explanations on how to operate and clean every device out there.

Here are basic instructions on how to use a portable dry herb vaporizer. The procedure for the Volcano vape is a little different.

1. Grind up your herb
2. Fill the chamber with herb
3. Select your temperature
4. Heat up your vape
5. Inhale through the mouthpiece
